Plastic bags polluting a beach

The problem with plastic bags — and the better alternative.

Plastic on a beach

The Problem

Every conventional plastic bag you use today will still exist 500 to 1,000 years from now. They do not biodegrade — they break apart into microscopic fragments called microplastics, contaminating soil, waterways, and eventually the food we eat.

Canada alone disposes of billions of plastic bags every year. Most end up in landfill. Many end up in nature.

The BagToNature Solution

BagToNature bags are made with BASF ecovio® — a certified plant-based material composed of ecoflex® (PBAT) and PLA (polylactic acid). Unlike conventional plastic, ecovio® is engineered to break down completely under industrial composting conditions — leaving behind no plastic residue, no microplastics, and no trace.

They are BPI Certified, meaning they have been independently tested and passed the ASTM D6400 standard — the most rigorous certification for compostable plastics in North America.

What BPI Certified Means

BPI (Biodegradable Products Institute) is North America's most recognized compostability certifier. A BPI Certified product has been independently tested against the ASTM D6400 standard and confirmed to biodegrade fully under industrial composting conditions.

BPI Certified products are accepted by municipal composting programs across Canada and the USA — including green bin programs.

Composting 101

Do This

  • Place the entire bag — contents and all — in your green bin
  • Accepted by most municipal composting programs in Canada and the USA

Not This

  • Do not place in your blue recycling bin
  • Not designed for home backyard composting

Check with your local municipality to confirm green bin acceptance in your area.

Still as Strong as Plastic

Switching to compostable does not mean compromising on performance. BagToNature bags offer the same puncture resistance and leak protection as conventional plastic bags — built to handle food scraps, yard waste, and heavy loads without fail.
